Dehumidifiers for Summer Cottages and Vacation Homes

Do you have problems with moisture or mold in your vacation home or summer cottage? You are not alone. Summer cottages that are unheated for periods are at higher risk, especially in crawl spaces and pier foundations.

Moisture problems often arise due to construction defects, climate, and poor ventilation. Moisture can seep in through exterior walls or accumulate in the foundation and attic. In the worst case, it can lead to mold or rot that affects the floor structure or insulation.

The best way to avoid moisture is to keep the vacation home or cottage heated year-round and ensure good ventilation in the property. Installing a desiccant dehumidifier to reduce and maintain low humidity is another effective, preventive measure.

Where Is Moisture Often Found in Vacation Homes?

  • Crawl Spaces and Pier Foundations: If there is negative pressure in the foundation during the summer, warm air can be sucked in and then cooled down in the cooler crawl space or pier foundation, leading to condensation on cold surfaces. Additional problems can include leaks, poor drainage, or slopes towards the house, causing water to run towards the property. Ground moisture or moisture around concrete beams can also cause problems.
  • Cold Attics: Cold attics can be a problem area in a vacation home. If warm air can easily move up through the vapor barrier (if there even is one) and meet the colder air in the attic, condensation occurs, especially if the construction has poor insulation or ventilation. A dehumidifier in the attic can effectively remove excess moisture and protect the cottage.

Mold in the Cottage?

If you discover mold, it is important to take action as soon as possible. Start by conducting an investigation to assess the extent and properly remediate it with professional help. You must address the root cause, such as improving the construction, ventilation, or keeping the cottage heated. A desiccant dehumidifier with an associated monitoring unit can, for example, keep the crawl space or attic dry and prevent moisture problems.

Choosing the Right Dehumidifier for Your Summer Cottage

The size of the summer house and the humidity level determine which dehumidifier you should choose. To dehumidify a crawl space, a desiccant dehumidifier, which works effectively in cool environments, is the right choice.

Our smallest desiccant dehumidifier, EvoDry 6H 2.0, is an excellent solution for vacation homes and can dehumidify a volume up to 100 m³. For larger country houses or homes, the EvoDry RCF 12 G1 is suitable, as it can handle up to 200 m³. If you need to dehumidify even larger spaces, the EvoDry RCF 20 G1 is an excellent choice. It handles problem areas up to 300 m³ with a dehumidification capacity of 17.7 liters per 24 hours at 20°C/60% RH (relative humidity). All dehumidifiers come with a three-year return warranty.
